Through it all, MEDIA’s core mission remained steadfast: to leverage informal education, cultural initiatives, and mass media as tools for social change. Its goal was to foster inclusive development and give a voice to the unheard. Over the years, the organisation steadily grew, attracting new collaborators and broadening its scope. Yet, despite this evolution, MEDIA’s fundamental purpose never wavered—building a society where marginalised communities are no longer left behind but are fully integrated into the social fabric with dignity and opportunity.
Today, as MEDIA looks back on decades of service, its early work continues to inspire its ongoing mission. What began as a small initiative in the slums of East Delhi has transformed into a dynamic organisation with a far-reaching impact, all while staying true to its vision of inclusive development and amplifying the voices of the underserved.
Throughout its journey, MEDIA has partnered with numerous prestigious organisations, including UNICEF, Red Barnet, Ford Foundation partner organisations, India’s renowned Sulabh International, and Prakriti, a social service organisation based in Nagpur. A noteworthy project involved MEDIA publishing the bilingual weekly newspaper Sulabh Swachh Bharat for Sulabh International over two years. The 32-page newspaper, published in both Hindi and English, aimed to empower civil society by spotlighting "good news" stories that highlighted positive contributions by individuals, government welfare initiatives, donor agencies, and nonprofits.
MEDIA has also made significant contributions to mass awareness through the production of more than 50 documentaries, short films, and animation films. Additionally, the non-profit organization created awareness songs and lent support to the Bengali feature film Uraan, which shed light on the serious issue of arsenic contamination in the groundwater in many regions of West Bengal.
More than three decades since its founding, MEDIA continues to pursue its mission with the same clarity of vision and dedication. What began as a group of friends seeking to make a difference has grown into a respected organisation, creating lasting impact and advocating for those on the margins of society.
For over three decades, MEDIA has dedicated itself to a singular, yet profound, mission: to elevate and integrate marginalised communities into the fabric of mainstream society. Our work is rooted in the belief that every individual, no matter their background or circumstances, deserves an equal chance to thrive. Through informal education, the power of information, and the unifying strength of culture, we strive to break the cycles of exclusion that so many communities face.
Our vision extends beyond temporary relief or short-term fixes. We aspire to foster long-lasting, systemic change by empowering those who have been left behind—ensuring that their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their potential is fully realised. At the heart of this effort is our commitment to uniting grassroots NGOs with similar ideologies, bringing them together on a common platform where they can amplify their collective impact. We believe in the power of solidarity and collaboration, knowing that when organisations unite, their strength is multiplied, and their reach is expanded.
MEDIA serves as both a bridge and a megaphone for these NGOs, connecting them to the wider world and giving them the tools they need to flourish. We understand that impactful stories are the fuel for social change. That is why we place a strong emphasis on using mass media—print, digital, audio-visual, and social media—to share the powerful narratives of success, resilience, and transformation that emerge from these grassroots organisations. By shining a spotlight on their achievements, we aim to inspire others, provoke thought, and, most importantly, ignite action.
Our mission is not just to broadcast stories but to change mindsets. We recognize that public opinion plays a crucial role in shaping policies, behaviours, and attitudes. Through our work in mass media, we seek to challenge stereotypes, confront inequality, and foster a more inclusive society where the marginalised are not merely seen but truly understood and valued. We aim to touch the hearts and minds of as many people as possible, building empathy and a collective sense of responsibility for one another.
